Need to compress a DVD/video_ts folder to fit on a dvd? Basic how to guide for Recode. |
Nero Recode will compress a dvd/video_ts folder to fit to a single layer disc. It's pretty easy to use.
This guide will show just how easy it is!
Once Recode is open you'll see several options. This basic guide will just be for the 1st 2. The screen shots are for the 'Recode Entire DVD to DVD' option but can be used for 'Recode Main Movie to DVD'.
Pick one of these options in Nero.
Next you'll need to add the video_ts folder. Click on 'Import DVD'. The 'Browse for Folder' will popup. Find the video_ts folder. If you're copying from a disc in the drive click on the drive and the folders on the disc will be displayed. If on your hard drive then just find the file. Once you locate the video_ts folder click on it then press 'ok'
Now Nero will do an analysis of the file. Doesn't take too long maybe a minute or two.
Once the analysis is done the video files will be displayed broken down
by menu, main movie and extras. You'll see the compression (if needed)
used next to each of them. The larger the video the more compression
that will be needed to fit on a single layer disc which holds 4.38 gig.
You'll see in this screen shot the main movie has 60.5% under 'video quality'. This means than 39.5% compression is being used. Nero by default puts more compression on the menu and extras to help with the quality of the movie.
To get the best quality doing main movie only would be your best option. To help save on some compression you can uncheck which audios you don't want. By default if the video has foreign audios Recode will automatically uncheck them. I just leave digital dolby 5.1 checked. Even if you don't have Digital Dolby the player will downmix the audio - so no problems just leaving this one checked.
When done just click on 'Next' You'll now get the Burn Settings screen. Pick which drive you want to burn to (have a blank in the drive 1st) under 'Destination' and set your burn speed in 'Write speed'. If using high compression - my rule of thumb is if the video quality is 70% or under check 'Advanced analysis'. Will take a bit longer but helps with the quality.
I wouldn't recommend the 'Burn-at-once' option. Using this option Recode will encode and burn at the same time - real time - so any little glitch in the encoding and bam burn fails and the disc is a coaster.
Let Recode encode the video and save it temporarily then the burn stage will begin.
You also have the option here to do more than 1 copy. Just type in the number in 'Number of copies'. When finished burning the 1st one Recode will ask for the next blank.
When done just click on 'Burn' . Now we're in the home stretch. All you have to do now is sit back and let Recode do it's thing. Recode will start the encoding - you'll see this on the top left hand side. The image next to Encoding will be in yellow. Once done encoding the burn starts and you'll see the image next to Burning in yellow now.
When done Recode will ask if you want to save a log - your choice. If all was ok then just click cancel take your new DVD out of the drive and Enjoy!
If not ok then save the log and start a blog for help.
See veeery easy :)
music files
Yea I found out, the hard way. Some are AVI , WMV, & FLV files. I have an Ipod and I buy music videos for my ipod as well. That has been another can or worms I've opened. Anyway I just would like to burn them on a dvd just because my colection now has grown and my poor computer can't handle so many files. I want to view them also on my dvd and not only reley on my ipod. The quality is poor I was able to get them on a DVD. Trial and error and bits and pieces from everyone so thanks guys. But please how can I edit them and make the quality a little bit better. I have an HDTV Don't know if that helps. Sorry for being such a pain but I'm knew to all this new technology stuff. And it's driving me crazy, but u got to be up with it. Thanks again U guz are a great help!
Music files/home video
Hey lcarl
The 1st 3 options in Recode are the ones you want to make a dvd that will play on a player. But these options only handle video that is already dvd compliant.
As you found out the next 2 will do the different formats but convert them to mpeg4 - a lot of players don't support that format.
So for the home video - use Vision instead - this will convert the home video to a dvd that will play on a player. I think it supports different music formats - I've just added little mp3 clips with the video.
What format are the music files in and are just trying to burn all the music to a disc?
Here's a guide for using Vision - link

Hi panser
Txs for the kudos on the guide!
I might have some advice on the chapter & splitting bit. What type of file format are you trying to breakdown - like say an avi, vob (regular dvd file) etc. Give me a little bit more info and I think I can come with something for you.

editting
Nah you're not a pain at all - no worries.
Use Vision to edit the video. Not sure if it handles flv files but does handle avi and wmv. After you add the vidoes pick the edit movie option on the right. Pick high quality 2-pass encoding to see if that helps the quality any. In Vision click on more then the dvd-video tab. Pick High-Quality next to encoding mode.
