Why the 'Bourne' series is better than the new 'Bond' |
I find it amazing that quietly the 'Bourne' spy action series has quietly become the new spy standard. Do you think it's a coincidence that the new Bond guy is blond? Casino Royale was a technically beautiful movie, but the story and the acting was so un-Bond like. No sarcasm, witty comments or movie womanizing, something Bond fans have come to expect from 007. I thought about it for awhile and realized that 'Bourne' has now become the new spy thriller standard, kind of the anti-hero, understated, somewhat vulnerable, but not the dashing bravado who always gets the girl in the end. This kills me about the movie industry, instead of sticking with a proven formula, they try to covertly make something off the success of a different formula and sadly many of the movie watching public falls for it. I really like 'Bourne' and I am looking forward to the next segments release in a few weeks. Conversely I grew up on Bond and although I saw Casino Royale, I think they should 86 Daniel Craig for Hugh Jackman, to me a much more believable Bond.
What do you think?

Bond
Hugh Jackman is definitely an interesting choice, but I think they made a conscious decision to go for more "realism" in Bond, which is -- I guess -- what the focus groups are asking for these days. I'm a big fan of the Bourne movies as well, but for a different reason -- the Bourne films are among the last major series of action movies that don't live and die on special effects and CGI, but rather on great, well choreographed stunts, and good screenwriting. To me, that's what action movies should be about, not Keanu Reeves flying around on wires...

Bond
Yes, I like 'Bourne' for the same reasons, however the I am still annoyed a bit that they steered away from the traditional 'Bond' approach.
