Maximizing your broadband connection speed for audio/video downloading and streaming (Nero MVP) |
Most audio/video enthusiast use a broadband connection to connect to the internet i.e. Cable, DSL, FiOS, Satellite etc. However, most people don't realize that the Windows OS is not configured to receive maximum throughput, therefore you are not getting all the speed you paid for! By tweaking your pc TCP stack you will improve download speeds, eliminate skipping in audio/video streams and improvement in browsing on many sites you frequent.
Here is a sure fire way to maximize your broadband speed by tweaking your TCP stack in Windows:
- Go to www.dslreports.com/tweaks and run the 'Tweak Test'
- Click 'start', watch it run and then when it's complete click the 'results' button
- On the next page you will have to input your set-up: Type of connection - Cable/DSL/FiOS etc, the download speed which your ISP advertised to you in KB, which version of Windows you are using 98/2000/XP/Vista etc, what protocol are you using to connect to your ISP.
- Hit enter after you complete all this information and the 'Tweak Test' will provide you with what your optimal settings should be
- Next go to www.dslreports.com/drtcp and download the appropriate version of DrTCP (you can download a ZIP file or a self-extracting executable file and it only installs where you want to launch it, I recommend your desktop)
- Run DrTCP and input the recommending settings from your 'Tweak Test'
- Re-boot your machine
- Go to www.dslreports.com/speedtest and run a speed test from a server closest to you
- Notice the improved results!
You can also modify your TCP receive window and your MTU settings utilizing DrTCP to tweak your settings to exactly your liking.
Happy downloading, viewing, listening and burning!
