Scary Patent from Microsoft

posted by NeroDude at 2 years ago

Microsoft recently released a truly disturbing patent application, for software that can dynamically take stock of what an OS user -- ANY user -- is doing, and display pop-up ads , right in the middle of OS usage.

Here's a diagram describing how that would work:

It may not seem like much, but can you imagine NEVER being able to escape from pop-ups?   To have them integrated right into the OS?   This would be an AWFUL inclusion, and I hope MSFT has no intention of adding this to any upcoming OS release.

Just think about the implications: watching a movie... and BAM... suddenly you get an ad telling you that you can rent better movies online.   In the middle of playing a game... BAM, you get killed because Windows thinks you need to see an ad about XBOX 360.

If Microsoft DOES choose to use this, I warn them: it could be the beginning of the death of their OS dominance.

True.
Yup.  Agreed 100%, Vurbal.  I'll be using XP until games just won't run on it anymore...  Also a good point about patent trolling... such a lame way to do business.

What a dumb idea!

I suspect this is actually MS acting as a patent troll. I've seen a lot of news stories lately talking about the possibility of running an internet based OS, which I also think is stupid. If I'm right, they're figuring that if someone develops such a beast they may try to make it ad supported. Assuming this patent is approved, that would mean any such effort would probably make money for them. OTOH it's also possible they're gearing up for their own online OS and want to protect themselves from other patent trolls.

Beyond the fact that it's a bad idea, it really disgusts me that something like this would be considered patent worthy. I'm glad I have extra copies of Windows XP to put on new computers. Until it won't run my programs (or at least until their latest and greatest will) I won't be giving them any more money for Windows.

I do not think that businesses would like this very much as it would most likely inhibit productivity.

Perhaps if it is optional, i.e., you can turn it off as you wish as I suppose there are folks out there that enjoy pop-up ads LOL!
